Police street checks are racist and illegal
They are harmful and discriminatory towards Indigenous, Black, and low-income communities, and have no basis in law.
Black, Indigenous, and low-income people are over-policed and under-protected. They are continually harassed and intimidated by police, and, for many, these interactions have become fatal.
Representatives of policing departments, as well as municipal and provincial governments, have made statements about the need to address systemic racism in policing, but have not taken meaningful action. One such immediate and concrete action is banning the blatantly racist and illegal practice of police street checks.
Communities are calling for radical change, and they need it now.
Hogan’s Alley Society, Black Lives Matter Vancouver, Union of BC Indian Chiefs, WISH Drop-In Centre Society, BC Civil Liberties Association, and over 68 organizations are calling for a complete ban of this practice. We need you to pressure the Province of BC, City of Vancouver, and Vancouver Police Board to ban street checks once and for all.
